@[email protected] Remember all the debates about whether it was ethical to imprison people for life in Guantanamo Bay Prison without a trial or even accusing them of a crime?
The pro-imprisonment side won.
Then just two years ago it was national news that Brittney Spears had been imprisoned for 12 years without ever being accused of a crime, and unlike the Guantanamo shadow prison this was explicitly allowed by the law passed by the California legislature, and has been the law for decades, and none of the Democrats in the California legislature even considered changing*
the law?*
They passed a law that said if you are a conservator you aren't allowed to steal money from the person you own, but they didn't take the obvious step of just not imprisoning people for having a disability. Also, even the weak law the did pass will be very hard to enforce because if a conservator steals money from the person they're abusing, then the victim can't sue since they don't have the legal right to do anything without their abuser's permission.
